What is Somatic Experiencing®?

SE® is based upon the observation that wild prey animals, though threatened routinely, are rarely traumatized.

These mechanisms provide animals with a built-in ”immunity” to trauma that enables them to return to normal in the aftermath of highly ”charged” life-threatening experiences.

If you want to know more about this approach, Fuensanta Muñoz SEP and Somatic Experiencing organizer in Spain, explains in the talk below (in Spanish), the SE approach to trauma and possible ways Dr. Peter Levine proposes to work with.

Join the forefront of trauma resolution

Somatic Experiencing is the result of more than 45 years of observation, research and practice developed by Dr. Peter Levine, based on the realization that humans have an innate ability to overcome the effects of trauma. Somatic Experiencing has changed the lives of thousands of people.

What will I learn in this Online Seminar?

  • To know the new paradigm proposed by Peter Levine.

  • A descubrir los fundamentos y aplicaciones de este método.

  • How to complement the clinical, cognitive and emotional work with the corporal approach.

  • A saber leer los signos del sistema nervioso autónomo de tus pacientes.

  • To find out when the client is in “fight or flight” mode, or “freeze”.

  • To facilitate that the three brains (Paul Mcklean’s triune brain model): the human neocortex, the mammalian limbic and the reptilian brain stem, can function in communication and in coherence.

Who is Peter Levine?

Peter A. Levine, Ph.D. is the Somatic Experiencing® creator and founder of Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute.

American therapist, author and educator, he specialized in the treatment and understanding of post-traumatic stress, developed Somatic Experiencing® and founded the organization for education and research dedicated to the healing and prevention of trauma: Somatic Experiencing Training Institute.

He worked as a stress consultant at NASA and occupies a leading position worldwide in trauma healing for his theoretical and technical contributions and as a therapist.

Dr. Levine is the author of the best selling book “Waking the Tiger – Healing Trauma,” (published in twenty languages)

Healing trauma: A very interesting question is asked and answered: why are wild animals that are frequently threatened, rarely traumatized? Understanding the dynamics that allow an animal to be virtually immune to its symptoms will allow us to unlock the mystery of trauma in humans.

In an Unspoken Voice: How the Body Releases Trauma and Restores Well-Being explores the interconnections between evolutionary neurophysiology, animal behavior, and trauma. It explains the neurophysiological basis of the brain in relation to trauma, and how, using bodily sensations, this trauma can be renegotiated and healed.

Who is it for?

The scope of application of SE® is very broad as a tool to facilitate self-regulation and expand perceptual skills

It is a highly valuable approach as a therapeutic and educational tool for professionals of:

  • Psychology and psychotherapy

  • Psychiatry

  • Medicine and nursing

  • Work and social assistance

  • Physiotherapy and osteopathy

  • Education

  • Police

  • As well as for parents and priests.

Since it is especially effective in the treatment of post-traumatic stress (accidents, situations of violence, surgical interventions, developmental traumas, etc.), it is highly recommended for professionals facing emergency situations or disasters, in addition to being very useful in the treatment of addictions.

Testimonials

“Somatics training is unique and essential. In the end all therapy must enter into the patient’s felt pain in order to make a real transformation, but those wounds are so protected that they have to be developed with much care and love, as the patient can break again. Thanks to Somatics training we can work with patients with very severe pathologies. The person is empowered by realizing his or her own system and the brain brings him or her the right information at the right time”.

Lucía Martínez Domínguez, Sanitary Psychologist, psychotherapist and trained in SE

“I live in the UK and decided to travel to El Rompido in Spain to study Somatic Experiencing, both because of the quality of the trainers and the place where the classes take place. The three years have been a wonderful process of transformation that has made a change in my life possible.”

Anita Ogilvie, Therapist and SE Trained

“In my professional career I have been investigating the relationship between stress and pain in the body for many years. And SE training was a before and after in my life. It gave me many answers to many questions that I had been asking myself for years. It has been a change at the professional level in my approach, to be more effective, and to see how the defensive response is behind so many diseases. On a personal level it was also an important change, since learning is from experience, we have to live it before us, so that later we can apply it to our patients/clients”.

Carlos López Obrero, Physiotherapist and SE trained

“It is a fundamental training for every therapist to be able to help the patient to regulate and to work through the trauma. I used to believe that the best way to work through trauma was for the client to tell their story repeatedly, but now I know that that doesn’t help, but that they need experiences of connection and inner security to be able to process the difficult later. The important thing for the person is to teach them to self-regulate their nervous system in order to release their tensions, wounds and trauma.”

I use many SE tools in the workshops I give for my students. I would highlight above all the way of being present with another person, that is
stay with the other person while staying with you, 50% with me, 50% with the other person. Also the “Titulación”, considered a form of exposure
gradual that allows contact with the unpleasant sensations that provoke threatening situations without feeling overwhelmed and finally the “Pendulation”, which basically is to teach that the autonomic system oscillates in a natural way and it is necessary to know how to accept both the pleasant and the most intense sensations without overflowing. I notice that I help my students to ” disidentify ” themselves from the role of victim and to reconnect with the meaning of life.
